How to Clean and Maintain Your Shower Curtain

How to Clean and Maintain Your Shower Curtain

Shower curtains are an essential part of any bathroom, serving as both a functional and decorative piece. However, with continuous daily use, they can quickly accumulate grime, mold, and mildew. Consistently cleaning and maintaining your shower curtain can help prolong its lifespan and keep your bathroom looking sparkling clean. Here are some tips for cleaning and maintaining your shower curtain so that you’ll be more excited than ever to jump right in!

Remove and Wash Regularly

The first and most important step in maintaining your shower curtain is to remove it regularly and give it a thorough wash. How often you should wash your shower curtain depends on factors like how frequently you use it and how quickly it accumulates grime. A good rule of thumb is to remove and wash it once a month. What’s the best way to do that?

To wash your shower curtain, remove it from the rod and throw it in the washing machine with a small amount of detergent. Add a few towels to the load because the texture will help to scrub away dirt and prevent the curtain from wrinkling. Make sure to use a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent any damage to the curtain's fabric.

Scrub Away Mildew and Mold

If your shower curtain has mildew or mold buildup, it's critical to address it as soon as you can. Mildew and mold can cause health issues and damage your curtain's material. These substances are really bad news! To remove them, mix equal parts of water and vinegar and apply the solution to the affected areas. Let it sit for a few hours, then scrub the area with a soft brush. Rinse the curtain thoroughly and hang it to dry before putting it back on the rod.

Prevent Soap Scum Buildup

Soap scum is the white film that builds up on your shower curtain over time. To prevent soap scum buildup, use a squeegee or towel to wipe down the curtain after each use. This will remove any excess water and soap residue, preventing them from drying onto the curtain. Also, consider using a soap-free shower gel or liquid soap to minimize soap scum buildup. There are also special products on the market designed to be used daily in the prevention of soap scum buildup, you may want to check them out.

Hang your Shower Curtain Properly

How complex can it be to hang a shower curtain? The truth is that it matters more than you might think. How you hang your shower curtain can affect its lifespan and cleanliness. When hanging your shower curtain, ensure that it's fully extended and not bunched up on the rod. This will allow it to dry more quickly and prevent mold and mildew buildup. Also, avoid letting the curtain touch the bottom of the shower, as this can cause it to absorb excess water and become damp. Basically, you want to avoid creating warm, humid pockets that mold and other substances like to call home.

Replace your Shower Curtain Regularly

Even with proper cleaning and maintenance, shower curtains will eventually wear out and need replacing. Experts suggest changing out your shower curtain every 6-12 months. Obviously, this depends on how often it’s used and how well it’s maintained. Over time, mold, mildew, and soap scum will build up making it more and more difficult to clean. Once you’re at that point, it’s time to start fresh! Check out Lanwood Home’s selection of premium shower curtains.
