What’s “Not Hot” - Bedroom Trends that are Over
Hopefully, you follow our blog, and if you do you’ve seen lots of trends and decor tips. Ideally, you’ve taken some inspiration from fresh bedding ideas and the best ways to make your home comfy and cozy. On the other hand, which trends is it time to let go of? In this post, we are covering the outdated trends that you want to avoid. Let’s jump in!
- Matchy-matchy furniture sets - If you toured homes in the nineties, chances are you saw a lot of perfectly matched bedroom and living room sets. Now, the trend of having exactly matched bedroom furniture sets, including bed frames, nightstands, and dressers, is outdated. Many people feel they lack personality and individuality, and now prefer a more eccentric mix of furniture pieces.
- Heavy, dark wood furniture - For a long time, really heavy furniture in dark wood tones was standard. Now, bulky furniture that was popular in the past is considered outdated. The truth is that style of furniture tends to make a room feel cramped and visually heavy. Lighter, more streamlined furniture is now preferred for a brighter and more modern look. Additionally, current trends point to minimalism and decluttering as inspiration.
- Over-the-top canopy beds - At one time, ornate canopy beds with heavy drapery and excessive embellishments were in vogue and a sign of wealth and luxury. Many people felt like the more indulgent their spaces, the better off their homes appeared. Now we know they can make a room feel dated and overwhelming. Currently, simpler bed frames or those with a minimalist design are more popular. Even Japanese-style bedding in its most simple form is becoming really popular.
- Themed or novelty bedding - Bedding with specialty designs, such as cartoon characters or bold patterns, is considered outdated - except for kids. It can quickly become visually overwhelming and may not reflect a mature or sophisticated style. Simple, timeless bedding choices are now favored unless you’re decorating your child’s nursery.
- Wallpaper borders - Wallpaper borders that were once used to accentuate walls are now considered outdated and honestly have been for a while. These were popular in the eighties and nineties and had a brief comeback in the early 2000 years. However, they are a quick way to make a room feel dated and can be challenging to remove or update. When house-hunting, they are often a feature that people point to when considering the house too old. However, that’s not to say that wallpaper is altogether outdated. Wallpaper has made a serious comeback, but opting for solid-colored or patterned wallpaper on entire walls should be your choice if you’re going for a modern look.
- Overly formal window treatments - This is another trend that appeared because people saw them in the homes of the wealthy. Heavy, ornate window treatments like elaborate drapes with valances or swags were once a sign of sophistication but now scream “too much”. They can make a room feel stuffy and dated. Simpler curtains or blinds that allow more natural light to enter are now preferred, and there are plenty of more sophisticated blind options to choose from today.
- Busy floral patterns - This might be a popular choice in the homes of your grandparents, but elsewhere these patterns need to go. Bold floral patterns on everything from wallpapers to bedding were once popular but are now considered outdated. They can make a room feel overwhelming and visually busy and don’t really go with current trends like minimalism and natural fabrics. Subtle or abstract patterns are much more fashionable and versatile today.
- Perfectly matched color schemes - It wasn’t long ago that monochromatic color schemes were common. Using a single color throughout the entire bedroom, including walls, furniture, and decor, was often seen. It can make a space feel monotonous and lacks visual interest. Mixing and layering different colors and textures is more contemporary and part of modern decorating.
- Excessive knick-knacks - Clutter is the ultimate enemy these days (see our decluttering post here). Crowding surfaces with excessively small decorative items is definitely not cool. It can make a room feel cluttered and chaotic, and truthfully we all just have too much stuff around. A more minimalist approach with a few carefully chosen decor pieces is now preferred for a cleaner and more streamlined look. For example, bookshelves should have a few books and a single picture frame or decor item rather than be crowded with several pieces.
