Tips To Help Keep You Cool At Night

If you have a hard time sleeping at night due to the heat, you’re not alone. Many people struggle to create a comfortable sleeping environment due to a hot bedroom or higher-than-average temperatures in the hotter months. Fortunately, with a few simple tips and tricks, it is possible to keep you cool at night so you can enjoy quality shut-eye. 

  1. Start your efforts to keep cool with your bedding. Opt for breathable materials such as cotton or linen to reduce the heat in the bed compared to synthetic materials. Additionally, you can increase the cooling effect by using a lighter bedding color, such as white, or even splashing out on a temperature-regulating mattress pad for extreme warmth.
  2. Manage airflow in your bedroom. Keep doors and windows closed during the day to keep the heat out, then open them in the evening to allow the cooler outdoor air to enter your room. You can also create a cross-breeze in the bedroom by placing a fan in each window. That way, the cooler air from outside circulates throughout the room. 
  3. Try to keep the direct light out of your bedroom window. You can reduce the effect of the sun’s rays by investing in blackout curtains or shades, or even try a window film. This type of product can reduce the UV and infrared rays that cause a room to become hot and stuffy in the summer months. 
  4. Invest in technology. Many houses now have a ‘smart house’ set up with internet-controlled thermostats. This means you can adjust the temperature in your bedroom remotely depending on the time of day. Setting your heat to a lower setting in the evening can make all the difference in providing a cool and calming sleeping environment. 
  5. Keep hydrated! If you can stay hydrated during the day, your body temperature will naturally cool down in the evening. Opt for chilled liquids and cool foods, such as fruit, throughout the day to promote a lower temperature, but avoid alcohol or caffeine as these can increase your body temperature and disrupt your sleeping pattern. 

Finally, practice relaxation techniques throughout the day. You can release tension from your body through meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises and reduce your overall temperature. If possible, do these activities in a cool room to further enhance the calming effects. These simple tips can make all the difference when trying to keep cool at night. By setting out a few easy steps, you can enjoy a cool and stress-free sleeping environment and ultimately help improve the quality of your sleep.
